William thanks Markham for kind words of appreciation to his work. He would like him to read "Quo Vadis" which he loves more than "After the Verdict". He has also enclosed McKeefee of the Kine". He has about thirty poems he would like to publish in a book if he could find a publisher. He appreciates his encouragement and will follow his advise.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
